How to Prepare Your Home for a Smooth Flooring Installation

How to Prepare Your Home for a Smooth Flooring Installation

Hi everyone! Joshua Given here, owner of Given Flooring in Seminole, Florida. Once you have picked out your beautiful new planks or tiles, the countdown to installation day begins. I know that having a crew in your home can feel like a major disruption, whether you are in a quiet neighborhood in Palm Harbor or a busy household in Trinity. However, a little bit of preparation goes a long way toward making the process faster, cleaner, and much less stressful for everyone involved. A well-prepared home allows my team to focus on what we do best: giving you a flawless finished product. Let’s talk about the specific steps you can take to get your space ready for a smooth transformation.

The most obvious task is clearing the work area of furniture and personal items. While some homeowners choose to have the installers move the heavy pieces, you should always take care of the small, fragile, or high-value items yourself. This includes clearing off bookshelves, removing electronics, and taking down low-hanging pictures or mirrors that could be bumped during the move. If we are working in a kitchen or bathroom in Odessa, make sure the counters are completely clear. Having a wide-open workspace allows the installers to move freely and safely, which directly impacts the speed and quality of the installation.

Closets and storage areas require a bit of extra attention that people often overlook. If we are installing new floors in a bedroom, the closet floor needs to be completely empty. This means moving shoes, boxes, and hanging clothes that might drag on the ground. We want to ensure the new flooring runs seamlessly into every corner and under every door frame. While you are at it, this is a great time to check your interior doors. New flooring, especially if you are switching from thin carpet to a thicker Luxury Vinyl Plank or tile, can sometimes change the height of the floor. You might want to be prepared for the possibility that a few doors may need a slight trim at the bottom to swing freely over your beautiful new surface.

Dust management is a big concern for many families in Pinellas and Pasco counties. While a professional crew will use high-quality saws and vacuum systems, some dust is a natural part of the tear-out and installation process. You can help by turning off your HVAC system during the actual cutting phases to prevent dust from being pulled into your ductwork and circulated throughout the house. Covering nearby furniture in rooms we aren’t working in with plastic sheets or old bedsheets is another smart move. It takes five minutes of prep but saves you an hour of dusting once the job is complete.

Appliances and electronics need a clear plan as well. If we are working in your kitchen or laundry room, please ensure that gas lines are disconnected by a professional and that ice makers or washing machines are unhooked and drained. We want to avoid any accidental water leaks on your brand-new subfloor. Additionally, if you have pets, please make sure they have a safe, comfortable spot away from the work zone. The noise of the saws and the presence of new people can be stressful for them, and keeping them in a separate room or at a neighbor’s house ensures they stay safe and out from underfoot.

Finally, clear communication with your installation team is the best way to ensure success. Make sure there is a designated spot for the crew to park and a clear path for them to bring materials into the house. Knowing which bathroom the crew is welcome to use and where they can access power and water will help the day start off on the right foot. When everyone is on the same page, the project moves along efficiently, and you get to enjoy your new floors that much sooner.

Until next time, this is Joshua Given reminding you that the foundation of a beautiful home is a beautiful floor.
